Planning learning, recording progress and reporting achievement
Planning Learning and Recording Progress and Achievement: a guide for practitioners
The first draft of this document is now available to download via the links below. We would welcome your comments. Please send these on the response form.
The document is in three parts - click to view:
1. The Introduction, Layer 1 “What is Essential?” and Layer 2 “What this means in Practice”
2. Layer 3, Further Guidance
3. Appendices including some examples of full proformas
PLEASE NOTE: At present the document is in PDF format. We acknowledge that this makes it currently difficult to access on screen. When reading this in Acrobat you may find the bookmarks useful for indicating where to refer between sections. It has not yet been possible to develop a more accessible version of the draft. However, printed versions, which are easier to read, have been produced for the consultation events that are running during the last two weeks of June. To find out about the consultation events, email Sue Grief: sgrief@lsda.org.uk.
Please note that the above document is not yet complete. As further sections are completed they will be made available on this page.
When you look at the draft please bear in mind the structure outlined on page 2 of the guide. We envisage that the final paper-based version will have different sections clearly indicated by colour coding and that the links between each section will be clearly indicated using colour coded symbols. We are also considering an interactive version on CD Rom, which allows easy movement between the different sections.

Staff development materials
We have developed a range of activities and resources that can be used by providers as part of their in-service training. The topics covered are:
- An introduction to the planning learning and recording achievement
- Involving the learners
- Setting goals and targets
These materials will be piloted and evaluated during May and June 2003. Organisations that are interested in piloting these should contact Sue Grief at sgrief@lsda.org.uk
We would welcome your thoughts on further topics for staff development materials relating to this project.

Initial guidance and examples
The links below provide initial guidance and examples of planning learning, recording progress and reporting achievement. These are not intended to be definitive, but rather as a starting point for debate, and we would welcome your feedback on their content (sent to LSDA: sgrief@lsda.org.uk).
The Learning and Skills Development Agency undertook a study of good practice in the recognition and recording of achievement in non-accredited basic skills and ESOL in 2001. The project included a questionnaire to basic skills and ESOL providers, case studies and an expert seminar. The report ‘Recognising and validating learning outcomes and achievements in non-accredited basic skills and ESOL’ includes:
- Case studies including examples of paperwork
- Key features of good practice
- Checklists for providers developing or revising systems and documentation
- Issues for further discussion
