3. Screening
What is Screening?
Screening is used to find out whether or not someone might have a literacy, language or numeracy need. If a need is recognised, initial assessment can then provide a means of establishing a learner's level/s. ABSSU does not recommend specific tools for screening. Rather we advise that providers use whichever screening materials best suit their learners, provided the tools result in a reliable indication of a learner's general ability in basic skills. For examples of tools, you may wish to refer to those listed below.
Screening Tools for Literacy and Numeracy
The 'Fast Track' Screening Tools for Literacy and Numeracy are available from the Basic Skills Agency (BSA).
Copies can be ordered from BSA for £9.00 plus postage and packing. To order a copy call 0870 600 2400 or fax 0870 600 2401.
Screening Tools for ESOL
The Unit will commission the development of an ESOL screening tool. The development of materials and trials of pilot ESOL screening tools are likely to take place during 2003.
Other Screening Developments
Updated and contextualised 'Fast Track'
The Adult Basic Skills Strategy Unit is commissioning the Basic Skills Agency to update 'Fast Track' with new designs and clearer handbooks and guidance. Two additional versions of Fast Track will be produced - one for use in general and community settings and one specifically for use in the workplace. We will pilot training modules as part of the project.
Screening for Family Literacy, Language and Numeracy
The Unit will work with BSA and a network of family practitioners to develop an appropriate approach and materials for use in Family Literacy, Language and Numeracy programmes, in Neighbourhood Nurseries and other community based settings, to help identify potential basic skill needs.
