The National Standards for Adult Literacy and Numeracy
The National Standards for Adult Literacy and Numeracy provide the basis for the whole learning infrastructure. The literacy standards cover the skills of speaking and listening, reading and writing. The numeracy standards cover the skills of interpreting, calculating and communicating mathematical information.
More information about the National Standards is available on the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) website.

Mapping Occupational Standards
This is a project to support on-line mapping of workplace basic skills, by mapping the adult literacy and numeracy standards to a wide range of occupational standards. The project supports work done by the BSA in piloting its brokerage scheme and working with Sector Skills Councils.
This project is using an on-line mapping programme to transfer 168 mapped standards from print to an interactive data base which can be used as the basis for designing learning programmes and producing materials for both work-based and educational settings. We will also publish workbooks on a range of occupations from Care, Construction, Engineering Manufacture and the Cleaning sectors and identify basic skills requirements for Health and Safety and Food Hygiene.
