LSC and DIUS launch new skills campaign
The Learning and Skills Council (LSC), working with the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS), has launched a new skills campaign to encourage adults to improve their skills.
The campaign targets all adults in England who could benefit at all levels, from Skills for Life and Apprenticeships, to higher education degrees and beyond. We hope the campaign will encourage many adults to improve their basic skills in literacy and numeracy and enable them to progress to further learning and employment. In time, the Skills for Life campaigns will come under the umbrella of this new skills campaign. The article below sets out the background to the campaign and contains information on how to get involved.
Our future is a challenging one. Put bluntly, we need to encourage everyone to gain better skills and qualifications - to improve the lives of people through acquiring better skills and jobs, and continuing to improve the productivity that businesses acquire through having more highly skilled and better trained staff.
In recent years the learning sector has reached some significant milestones - proving the ability of the sector and the professionals working within it beyond any doubt:
- We currently have the highest ever success rates in Further Education
- Record numbers of young people are in learning
- More adults than ever before are achieving Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications
- Targets have been exceeded for improving basic skills and the recruitment of Apprenticeships.
But we’re not complacent. The stakes are getting higher. There’s much, much, more to be done. We know people, businesses, the economy and the Government demand more skills.
While there is much to be done in ensuring supply, we also need to stimulate demand. We must work together to create a culture that means everyone knows why learning and skills are important, how to do them, when to do them and where to get them.
The Learning and Skills Council, working in partnership with you, has been tasked to lead a vital programme of work. Its aim is simple, its ambition is greater – to deliver the message about why skills are vital to us all.
To achieve this aim, we as a sector need to unite together and show how by taking control of our life through learning and skills, you can have a better life, a better business, a better job, get on, and flourish.
Our Future. It’s in Our Hands. Join the campaign today.
