How to  a course

1.         Fancy updating your skills? Taking a course could provide huge benefits for your life and work. Today, there are lots of different ways to improve your reading, writing and maths skills. You can learn at a college, in an informal group, or even on-line. What’s important is that you learn in the place and at the time that suits you best.

2.         When you call our free helpline on 0800 100 900, you can talk to a friendly adviser about your reading, writing and maths skills. The adviser can send you a free ‘Get On’ video or DVD pack, and tell you about places in your local area where you can go on a free course to improve your skills.

3.         The free ‘Get On’ video or DVD features people who have improved their word and number skills – and their lives – by going on a free course in their local area. The pack also has practical tips to help you with every day tasks like taking down a telephone message.

4.         When you are ready to start a course, an advisor on 0800 100 900 will give you someone’s name and ‘phone number in the college or group of your choice. It is up to you whether you call the college or group, or simply pay them a visit.

5.         Before you join a class, your tutor will talk with you about the skills you need help with. For example, some people are good at reading but need help with spelling or want to learn how to write a business letter. Or you may be good at using whole numbers but have trouble with decimal points.

6.         Your tutor will then write your own personal learning plan, so that you get exactly the right type of help you need and don't have to go over things you can already do.

7.            Remember – you decide exactly what you do and the pace at which you learn. You can just improve your word and number skills or work towards the new National Tests in literacy and numeracy. Courses are also taught up to GCSE level and can be taken as a part of an NVQ.

8.         So why not start today, by calling our free helpline on 0800 100 900 for advice and information, including the free video pack. There has never been a better time to ‘Get On’ a course and improve your skills.
