Using the site

Finding your way around the Read Write Plus web-site
This section of the Read Write Plus web-site describes how to get the best from the site, and how to navigate around it effectively.

While you are viewing the Read Write Plus web-site, there will always be 8 icons (small pictures, with descriptions next to them). These icons are the best place to start to find what you are looking for. When you click on these icons they will take you to the following sections of the web-site: news, who we are, links, key documents, learning, planning & funding, research and events.

When you visit the Read Write Plus web-site's home page (the main 'index' page), you will have an extra four icons on the right hand side of the page. These are labeled learners, providers, employers and agencies.  If you click on the icon that best describes what you are, you will be taken to a list of the sections of the web-site that are most relevant to you. To view one of these sections, just click on it's name.

You can alternatively search for what you are trying to find on the site by typing one or more words in the box entitled 'Search' which is always at the bottom of the web-page.

You can always return to the Read Write Plus web-site's home page by clicking on the blue picture that says 'Read Write Plus' and has three pictures within it: a book, a pen & a plus sign.

When you view one of the main sections of the Read Write Plus web-site, you will see an icon near the top of the screen with the name of the section on it. For example: 'Key Documents' or 'Research'. Immediately underneath this icon will be listed links to the sub-sections, for example: in the 'Research' section, it may have the following as sub-sections 'International', 'New Findings'.

You can always see which section of the web-site you are within by looking along the top of the page, starting from the left will be links to each section above the page you are viewing. For example, if you were in the 'International' page of the 'Research' Section you would see the following along the top of the page: 'Read Write Plus > Research > International', clicking on one of these words will take you to the correct section with that name.

At the top right hand corner of the web-site you will see the words: 'Last updated' and a date. This indicated when new content of any kind was last added to the Read Write Plus web-site.   

Registering with Read Write Plus
To register with Read Write Plus, please click on the registration link on the bottom of the website. This will take you to a form which will ask for a few details from you. Please fill in these details and then click on the register button. If you answer 'yes' to whether or not you want to receive the newsletter, we will send you a regular newsletter.

How to receive a Newsletter from Read Write Plus
Please click on the register link at the bottom of each page, then while you are filling in your details please select 'yes' to the question: 'Do you want to register for the newsletter'.

Viewing events related to Read Write Plus
To view details of events related to Read Write Plus, please click on the 'events' icon in the menu that is always on the left hand side of the page. This will take you to a page that has a map. If you move your mouse cursor over the different parts of the map, the box entitled 'Selected Regions', will display the names of the places within that section of the map. By clicking on one of these regions, you will be taken to details of the events within that region. Alternatively you can use the box at the bottom of the page that will drop down a list of regions when you click on it. When you click on one of the names within this drop down box, you will be taken to details of the events within that region. To see all of the events across the whole country, please select 'National' from the drop down box.

Once you are taken to the page displaying the details of the events, you will see a list of the forthcoming events in the region that you selected. If there are no events in the near future in that region, then the page will say that there are no events.

If you know of an event that you think should be listed on the Read Write Plus web-site, you can click on the 'contact us' link on the regional events pages where it says: 'contact us to add an event'. This will take you to a page where you will be able to fill in a form with all the details of the event. This will then be sent to us where we can check the details and then publish the event on the Read Write Plus web-site.

Finding other related web-sites
The easiest way to find sites related to Read Write Plus is to click on the 'links' icon in the menu that is always on the left hand side of the page. This will take you to a page displaying a list of all of the related links that we think may be of use to you. When you first click on one of these links, if it is a link to a web-site that we regard as external, then a disclaimer will be displayed. This disclaimer just says that you are going to an external web-site and we accept no responsibility for that web-site. If you don't want to see the disclaimer again, just click on the button that says: 'Don't show this disclaimer again', and then click on the 'External Link' link and you will be taken to the external web-site and the disclaimer won't be displayed again.

Viewing key documents
To find the 'key documents', please click on the 'key documents' icon in the menu that is always on the left hand side of the page. This will take you to a page with a list of links to the key documents. Links to some of the important key documents will also be displayed at the top of the page, just under the 'key documents' image. Some of the links link to web-based documents on other web-sites, and some link to documents on our own web-site. When you click on a link to a document on our own web-site, it will open a pop-up window, telling you what format the document is in - click on this icon to open the document. If a program is required to view the document, the pop-up window gives you a link to where the program can be downloaded from.

How to view the Read Write Plus news sections
Please click on the 'news' icon in the menu that is always on the left hand side of the page.This will take you to a page that was two links at the top - 'National News' and 'Regional News'. Click on the these Links to view the news that you would like to see.

If you click on regional news, this will take you to a page that has a map. If you move your mouse cursor over the different parts of the map, the box entitled 'Selected Regions', will display the names of the places within that section of the map. By clicking on one of these regions, you will be taken to the news articles from that region. Alternatively you can use the box at the bottom of the page that will drop down a list of regions when you click on it. When you click on one of the names within this drop down box, you will be taken to the news articles from that region. To see the national news, please select 'National' from the drop down box or click on the national news link just below the news image at the top of the page.

Once you are taken to the page displaying the news article's titles, you can click on the underlined title to view the news article.

Contacting the Adult Basic Skills Strategy Unit
If you would like to contact us, you can find our contact details by clicking on the 'contact us' link at the bottom right of every page. This will take you to a page that displays our email address and our mailing address. 

Alternatively you can click on the 'who we are' icon in the menu that is always on the left hand side of the page. This will take you to a page with information about who the Adult Basic Skills Strategy Unit are and details of our telephone number and mailing address.
